Frequently Asked Questions

How do I join?
Pick up an Blue Book from the Guidance office and fill out the application on the last page (or click here to download an application) and return it to Mrs. Wingen along with your transcript  Applications for the 2007-2008 school year are due on April 20, 2007.
   
What is a transcript - Where do I get one?
A transcript is a print-out of a student's grades for all classes taken at a school. A parent or student can request a transcript from the office of the school.   
   

What happens after I turn my application in?

Applications are screened by the academy teachers and you will be called for an interview.  A few weeks following the interviews, you will be notified by mail of your acceptance.
   
When are the applications due?
Applications for admittance in the program beginning the 2007-2008 school year are due back to Mrs. Wingen by April 20, 2007.
   

Can I join the Health Academy as a Sophomore, Junior or Senior?

Yes, however, you will only receive a certificate of participation and you must complete all major course work within the academy.
   
What are the field studies?
Field studies are 1/2 day to 1 day trips to expose students to post-high school education and work in the health and medical field.

Will I be able to take AP courses?
YES! Students are not restricted from taking any AP courses they desired and are encouraged to take them. 
   

Is this a program I should be in if I want to be a veterinarian?

Absolutely!  Veterinary medicine is very similar to human medicine.  The Health Academy is currently increasing their partnerships with veterinarians to make more job shadows available.
   

Will being in this program help me get into college?

Since the program's conception in 1996, most graduates have attended four-year colleges, including renown colleges such as Brown University, UCLA, USC, UC Davis, and UCI. (Click here for map of where are our graduates have gone.) Once graduated, your transcript will indicate that you are a graduate of the Health and Medical Occupations Academy.  Contacts made while you are in the academy also help tremendously with college entrance.
   
How old do you have to be to be a volunteer at South Coast Medical Center?
At least 14 years old.
   
Is my child covered if an injury occurs while they are volunteering at the hospital?
Yes, all volunteers are covered under a workman's compensation policy.
   
Is there a uniform that is required to be worn while volunteering at the hospital?
Yes, the Health and Medical Occupation's Academy polo shirt with scrub pants.
   
When are the Chemistry Volunteer Hours due?
One week prior to finals each semester. Hours for Health Science II cannot count for chemistry hours in the same year. 
   
Are students able to work with patients?
