Michael Rogers II had everything correct, EXCEPT the following FACT:
Students (at least those from San Clemente) DID NOT OPT to Graduate from San Clemente
High. We were not afforded the option of selecting this decision for ourselves. I went up
against the District to get into Dana Hills, since almost every one of my friends were
going to school there. It would have been nice to have my friends see me graduate. I
remember this well, because I fought those folks TOOTH and NAIL over this issue. It was
the lowest point of my High School career. Those of us WHO WERE FORCED TO GRADUATE FROM
San Clemente HIGH WERE NOT GIVEN A CHOICE. It was, as the Powers that Be in the District
Office put it to me, "Either you attend San Clemente, Mr. Le Gault, or you WILL NOT
graduate. PERIOD." The [Assistant Principal] personally threatened me with EXPULSION
for bringing the matter to the attention of these pinheads. Since those of us in the
"San Clemente" group were only 17 or 18 years old, we did not have the political
skills or the legal sophistication necessary to "take on the establishment" over
this matter. Believe me, there were a lot of other things I would rather have done than
ride the bus everyday to San Clemente (at great expense to taxpayers) only to be exiled
from virtually all of my friends. I will always remember this issue as being the first of
many injustices served to me by the unbending Bureaucracy that thinks it knows far better
what to do with me than I do myself...
I take some comfort to know that in this day of video cameras and instantaneous
communication, those responsible for this type of capricious decision would probably have
their butts sued (and fired) over this type of nonsense.
On behalf of those of us who were dealt this injustice, please feel free to submit this
correction to Michael Rogers II version of the Official Record.
Sincerely, Gregory M. Le Gault, San Clemente High School, Class of 73
