Make the Most of Your SummerDon't take just any summer job. Look for a job that interests you AND allows you to explore potential career fields. Consider volunteering as an intern. Come to the Career Center for ideas and job interview tips.
Summer Service. Community service is an opportunity for you to make a difference while enjoying your summer. Find something that you feel strongly about, and make a difference. Websites to check out for additional ideas:
Idealist-http://www.idealist.org Get a head start. Use the summer to research and visit colleges. There is no substitute for being there and getting a feel of each campus. Take photos and jot down your impressions to remind you of each school’s unique characteristics. Start your scholarship search, and develop application essays. Update your resume. www.collegeboard.com Free test prep. The University of California offers free test preparation for the SAT or ACT online. You can utilize tutorials, practice sessions, build your vocabulary with "Word of the Day" and try the "Question of the Day" to prepare for both the SAT and ACT tests by logging on to www.cavhs.org. |
Work Permits Work permit applications may be picked up in the career center. They must be signed by the employer and include the name of the workmen's compensation insurance carrier. A parent or guardian must also sign the application. A social security number is required to process a work permit. Students need to bring the application to the career center. Please allow one day to process your work permit. The completed work permit is picked up by the student and taken to his/her employer. Each new job requires a new work permit. The permit is made out to the employer. It's the Law! |

California law requires any student under the age of 18 to obtain a work permit. The hours a student may work vary according to age. 15 years and under:

| Students enrolled in ROP CVE classes receive credit for their work experience and may be issued an extended work permit to work additional hours. These students attend class once a week for related instruction. CVE classes are offered in Restaurant, Retail and Business Technology. A student may earn 10 credits a semester for his/her work experience. |
