  • Strong subject matter curriculum and standards
  • Equity and a strong commitment to educational excellence for all students
  • Awareness of the needs and expectations of students Supportive non-academic services
  • Extracurricular activities to strengthen students' social and academic skills
  • Parental involvement
  • Strong programs to work with at-risk, disadvantaged and disabled students
  • Student empowerment in the school's policies
  • Ability to assess student achievement on an individual basis
  • Strong technology at the school
  • Safe and clean learning environment
  • Ongoing professional growth and collaboration for staff Strong school leadership
School Selection Process
Must first be named a California Distinguished School.
  • Must complete a 40-page application, which involves the commitment of the full school community.
  • Judged in context of how effectively the school has defined and is meeting its own goals-and how well it serves children, their families and the local community.
